Ghana rolls out chip-embedded passports today | Ghana has started the issuance of chip-embedded passports today, Monday, April 28, 2025.

The upgraded passports feature advanced biometric capabilities and are designed to gradually replace the existing biometric passports. All current biometric passports remain valid.

The new documents will be linked to the national identification system, providing a more secure and efficient method of authenticating passport holders’ identities.

The design of the new e-passports reflects Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, showcasing Adinkra symbols representing Freedom, Independence, Democracy, and Cooperation. The initiative, which began as a project in 2016 in partnership with Biometric Travel Solutions Limited, aims to enhance security with features that incorporate cutting-edge anti-fraud technology.

On his Facebook page, Mr. Ablakwa shared that the reform is part of efforts to improve efficiency and accountability in passport offices nationwide. Integral to these changes is the introduction of chip-embedded passports, which comply with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines.

The ICAO has mandated that all member countries transition away from non-chip passports by 2030.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that applicants would not incur additional fees for courier delivery services of the new passports. Ghana Post has been designated as the primary courier service provider, enabling applicants without a home address to collect their passports at nearby Ghana Post offices.

In addition to the courier system, a 24-hour passport operations and delivery service will be launched, potentially creating new jobs within the sector.

Despite these advancements, the government has announced a reduction in passport application fees. Mr. Ablakwa indicated that the costs associated with the reforms would be funded through a public-private partnership, ensuring no additional financial burden falls on the Ghanaian taxpayer.
