Big Push: Government Targets Tourism Hotspots | By David Kwakutse | Government is taking decisive steps to boost tourism and economic activity in the Central and Western Regions of Ghana with the start of construction on the dualisation of the Takoradi–Cape Coast Highway.
The project is one of the flagship infrastructure projects under President John Dramani Mahama’s Big Push agenda.
The groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for today, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, will be performed by President Mahama as part of his one-day working visit to the Western Region. The dualisation of the 90-kilometre stretch marks a major milestone in government’s commitment to developing world-class infrastructure to support the country’s growing tourism and investment potential.
A statement from the Presidency said the project, one of thirty-two major roads captured in the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, forms part of a broader national drive to open up key tourism corridors, stimulate local economies, and create sustainable jobs.
The Central and Western regions are among Ghana’s most significant tourism and cultural hubs, boasting heritage sites such as the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, pristine beaches, vibrant cultural festivals, and eco-tourism attractions.
They are also home to critical natural resources, including gold, oil, and timber, making them central to Ghana’s economic and tourism development agenda.
The dualization of the Takoradi–Cape Coast Highway is expected to unlock the significant tourism and investment potential of this unique corridor, given the ongoing Accra-Cape Coast dualization project that is expected to connect with this new project and make commuting from the capital, Accra, to Cape Coast and Takoradi a stress-free experience.
The improved road is expected to enhance accessibility for both domestic and international tourists travelling to the coast, while supporting hospitality, trade, and transport businesses along the route. The move aligns with President Mahama’s vision of positioning Ghana as a leading tourism destination in Africa by improving infrastructure, safety, and the overall travel experience.
During his visit, President Mahama is also expected to inspect ongoing expansion and renovation works at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and the Western Regional Hospital, both part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the region.
By targeting major road corridors that link Ghana’s tourism, industrial, and cultural centres, the Big Push initiative seeks to ensure inclusive growth across the country.
The Takoradi–Cape Coast Highway dualisation is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve safety, and make the country’s rich tourism belt more accessible to both local and international visitors.
