Man United’s Ruben Amorim Exit Could cost club £50 million | By David Kwakutse
Manchester United’s decision to sack head coach Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge is not only a sporting headline but a stark reminder of the financial calculus that underpins top-tier football management.
The move will have significant cost implications for the Premier League club’s finances, mirroring business challenges seen in major industries such as aviation where contract exits carry heavy penalties.
Amorim was appointed as United head coach in November 2024, signing a contract that was set to run until June 2027. The Portuguese coach’s departure this week means the club must now honour the remainder of that deal. Under the terms of his agreement, which reportedly did not include a discounted early termination clause, Manchester United is expected to pay out the balance of Amorim’s salary for the remaining 18 months he was contracted, estimated at around £9.75 million based on his annual salary of approximately £6.5 million.
In addition, the club earlier paid around £11 million in compensation to Sporting Lisbon to secure Amorim’s release and appointment. Combined with severance, wages already paid, and his contract payout, Manchester United faces a bill in the region of £27 million from this managerial tenure alone.
The decision to part ways comes amid poor performance on the pitch, including the club’s worst Premier League finish in decades and a failure to qualify for European competition this season. It also followed public disagreements between Amorim and the club’s hierarchy over transfer policy and strategic direction.
Beyond direct contractual payouts, Manchester United is likely to incur further costs as it seeks a new permanent head coach. Industry estimates suggest total expenditure, including recruitment, compensation, and contractual costs for a successor, could approach £50 million for this managerial transition.
For business observers, the switch highlights the financial risk of long-term executive contracts in elite sports, where early termination penalties can weigh heavily on a club’s bottom line.
