BoG Converts Rural Banks into Community Banks as Ghana Marks 50 Years of Rural Banking | The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced the conversion of all Rural and Community Banks (RCBs) into Community Banks, marking a major milestone in the country’s financial sector reforms.

In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, the central bank said the move forms part of its ongoing microfinance sector reform agenda aimed at strengthening community-level financial intermediation and expanding access to financial services across the country.

As part of the transition, all affected institutions have been directed to complete statutory name changes, corporate rebranding, and other regulatory alignments by the end of December 2026.

According to the BoG, the conversion comes at a significant moment as Ghana celebrates the 50th anniversary of rural banking. The central bank noted that the anniversary presents an opportunity to reposition the subsector for the future.

“Through this conversion, the Bank of Ghana is repositioning the Community Banking sector as a modern banking segment to deepen inclusive finance in both rural and urban communities and integrate them into the national financial architecture,” the statement said.

Rural banking was introduced in 1976 by the Government of Ghana and the Bank of Ghana to improve access to financial services in underserved communities and integrate rural populations into the national financial system.

Over the past five decades, the subsector has evolved into a critical pillar of Ghana’s banking industry and financial inclusion efforts. The BoG revealed that the sector currently consists of 147 licensed institutions operating nearly 1,000 branches nationwide and serving more than eight million customers.

The central bank attributed the growth and success of the subsector to sustained policy support, a development-focused regulatory framework, and the strong relationship between community-owned banks and their customers.

The BoG expressed confidence that the transformation will modernise the sector, enhance financial inclusion, and support economic development in both rural and urban communities across Ghana.
