Amazon Eyes Ghana for Digital Connectivity | Ghana’s efforts to attract global investment have received fresh momentum following talks between President John Dramani Mahama and senior Amazon executives in New York.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. It formed part of President Mahama’s broader push to deepen Ghana’s economic ties with major US corporations.
The President wants these partnerships to focus more on investment, technology, skills development, productive enterprise and job creation. This approach marks a shift from relying mainly on traditional development assistance.
At a separate US–Ghana Presidential Roundtable, Mahama also called for stronger cooperation in trade, investment, technology and strategic partnerships.
Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, described his engagement with the President as productive. He also highlighted Ghana’s potential role in Amazon’s plans to expand broadband connectivity across Africa.
Zapolsky oversees Amazon’s legal, policy, compliance and regulatory affairs.
The discussions therefore place digital connectivity at the centre of Ghana’s engagement with the technology giant. However, the potential partnership could have wider implications for the country’s digital economy.
Greater access to high-speed internet could support digital education and healthcare delivery. It could also expand financial inclusion and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs.
Furthermore, improved connectivity could strengthen e-commerce and agriculture while giving more young Ghanaians access to the global digital economy.
The development also aligns with Ghana’s ambition to become a leading technology and digital hub in West Africa. The country’s position as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat could add to that ambition.
A stronger digital infrastructure could make Ghana more attractive to international businesses seeking access to the wider African market.
The engagement with Amazon therefore reflects Ghana’s broader effort to use international partnerships to attract capital, technology and expertise. It also highlights the growing importance of digital infrastructure to the country’s economic transformation.
