BoG Appoints Deputy Governor To GoldBod Board | Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama has appointed Second Deputy Governor Matilda Asante-Asiedu to represent the central bank on the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
Dr Asiama made the appointment in a letter dated May 11, 2026. The directive took effect on the same day. Under the arrangement, Mrs Asante-Asiedu will attend and fully participate in GoldBod board meetings on behalf of the Governor. She will also represent the Bank of Ghana’s interests on the board.
Additionally, she will exercise the rights and responsibilities attached to the central bank’s position on the board. The appointment comes amid renewed attention to the relationship between the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod. It also follows questions about the Governor’s previous membership of the gold trading institution’s board.
Former Finance Minister and Karaga MP Dr Mohammed Amin Adam raised concerns over the Governor’s role. He questioned whether his position on the GoldBod board could create a potential conflict of interest.
The concerns partly centred on the Bank of Ghana’s previous involvement in financing GoldBod’s gold purchases.
However, the central bank ended its pre-financing arrangement for GoldBod’s gold purchases from July 1, 2026. Since then, GoldBod has taken on a greater role in gold purchases and foreign exchange intermediation arrangements.
Dr Asiama has also stated that he resigned from the GoldBod board about five months ago. Consequently, he no longer attends its meetings.
According to the Governor, the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), requires the Bank of Ghana to have representation on the board. However, he said the law does not require the Governor personally to serve in that role.
Mrs Asante-Asiedu’s appointment therefore ensures that the Bank of Ghana maintains its representation on the GoldBod board.
At the same time, Dr Asiama will remain outside the board’s meetings in his personal capacity as Governor. The Governor has also asked the GoldBod board to extend the necessary courtesies to Mrs Asante-Asiedu. This, he said, will enable her to perform the assignment effectively. The move provides a formal channel for the central bank’s continued participation in GoldBod’s board while separating that representation from the Governor’s personal membership.
