African airlines recorded one of the strongest regional performances in the global air transport market in August, with passenger demand rising 6.7% year-on-year, according to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The increase contrasts with a contraction in global demand, which fell 0.8% compared with August 2025. Excluding Middle Eastern carriers, however, global demand increased 0.6%.
For African airlines, capacity expanded faster than demand. Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) increased 8.3% year-on-year, while passenger demand, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs), grew 6.7%. The resulting load factor was 78.4%, down 1.2 percentage points from August 2025.
The data point to continued underlying demand for air travel across Africa, but also highlight the challenge of converting that demand into stronger aircraft utilisation and airline financial performance. The 5.8 percentage-point gap between capacity and demand growth suggests airlines added seats at a faster rate than passenger traffic increased during the month.
Africa’s performance also stands out against the broader weakness in global aviation. Total international demand declined 0.9%, while domestic demand fell 0.5%. Global capacity nevertheless increased 0.3%, contributing to an overall load factor of 85.1%.
The Middle East was a major drag on the global figures, with carriers in the region reporting a 14.6% year-on-year decline in demand, reversing an improving trend.
IATA Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist Marie Owens Thomsen said weaker global connectivity in August reflected a more challenging environment, with higher energy prices potentially reducing travellers’ purchasing power and geopolitical instability weighing on travel decisions.
The latest figures reinforce the region’s growth potential while underscoring the importance of disciplined capacity planning. Airlines will need to match fleet and seat expansion more closely with demand to improve load factors and strengthen the economics of the continent’s expanding aviation market.
