Ghana assists Nigerians deported from US under Trump | By Dominick Andoh | Ghana has increased efforts to assist Nigerians affected by the Trump Administration’s deportation campaign, offering safe passage back to their home country for West African nationals removed from the United States.
President John Dramani Mahama confirmed at a Presidential Media Encounter on Wednesday, September 11, 2025, that Ghana has received 14 deportees from the US. Thirteen were Nigerian citizens, while one was from The Gambia.
According to the President, the United States approached Ghana to serve as a transit point for deported West Africans. Accra agreed, citing the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement, which allows citizens of member states to enter and stay in fellow countries visa-free for up to 90 days.
“We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and then we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable,” Mahama explained. “So if you are bringing our colleague West Africans back, that’s okay.”
Ghana went beyond simply accepting the arrivals. Authorities arranged ground transport to move the Nigerian deportees safely back across the border. For the Gambian national, government officials worked with the Gambian Embassy to secure an air ticket for his return.
President Mahama underscored that the move was not just an act of compliance with international protocols but also a gesture of solidarity within West Africa. “Any West African is free to come to Ghana and stay for 90 days. And so if they are bringing our colleagues back, we don’t have a problem accepting them,” he said.
While the Trump Administration’s deportation policies have been criticised for their impact on African nationals, Ghana’s actions highlight a different story: one of regional cooperation and responsibility.
By stepping in, Ghana has ensured that deported Nigerians and other West Africans are treated with dignity and returned safely to their homelands.
President Mahama, however, did not reveal whether the US provided Ghana with any financial incentives for this diplomatic arrangement.
