At the age of 92, Alhaji Banda, the founder of Antrak Air, succumbed to health complications in the early hours of March 1, leaving behind a legacy that transformed air travel in Ghana.
His death has reverberated throughout the country, drawing condolences from government officials, business leaders, and members of the aviation community.
Alhaji Banda began his career in an era when air travel in the country was limited. With a vision to enhance domestic connectivity, he established Antrak Air in 1996. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication led to the creation of a viable airline that not only offered reliable services but also set the standard for quality in the industry. Under his leadership, Antrak Air quickly garnered a reputation for excellence, becoming a pivotal player in the Ghanaian aviation landscape.
At its peak Antrak Air, was the largest domestic airline in Ghana, offering daily services from Accra to Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale and Takoradi.
Alhaji Banda’s innovative approach and commitment to safety and customer satisfaction paved the way for other airlines to enter the market. His legacy is evident in the subsequent emergence of several carriers, including Africa World Airlines, Starbow, PassionAir, and Ashanti Airlines, which followed in his footsteps and expanded air travel options for Ghanaians. His ambitions extended beyond our borders—he dreamed of taking his airline operations to the Middle East and across the continent.”
“I recall vividly his bid to take over Ghana Airways during my tenure as Chairman of the airline. He saw potential where others saw decline. He was a man who believed in the strength of Ghanaian ingenuity and the possibilities of a thriving national airline. Unfortunately, as has happened to many before him, his entanglement with politics proved costly. Ghana has witnessed too often how business and politics can be an uneasy mix, a lesson that should serve as a cautionary tale to future entrepreneurs,” Sir Jonah added.
“Such a privilege knowing this adorable couple, ALHAJI & EDWINA ASOMA-BANDA, in the last three decades… Today, the elephant has fallen… May ALLAH bless BAABA for keeping ALHAJI comfortable to the end. May ALLAH comfort the entire family, his wives, and children,” Nigerian businessman and close family friend, Chief Dele Momodu, paid tribute to him on Instagram.
