Ghana Engages South Africa Over Xenophobic Attacks on Nationals
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has initiated high-level diplomatic engagement with South Africa following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the minister confirmed that he held a telephone conversation with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, over widely circulated videos showing disturbing incidents involving Ghanaian nationals.
According to Ablakwa, the South African government has expressed sympathy for the victims and committed to conducting full-scale investigations into the incidents. Authorities in Pretoria are also expected to brief African ambassadors as part of efforts to address the situation and reassure diplomatic missions.
The minister disclosed that Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, has been in constant contact with Accra, coordinating the country’s response and ensuring the safety of affected citizens.
He confirmed that the main victim featured in the viral video has been located and is receiving consular support from Ghana’s diplomatic mission. “He is doing very well,” Ablakwa noted, adding that no Ghanaian fatalities have been recorded.
The government has urged calm among citizens, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaians both at home and abroad. Mr. Ablakwa reiterated that the administration remains resolute in protecting the welfare and security of its nationals.
While condemning the incidents, he also called for restraint and unity across the continent, stressing that such acts should not undermine Africa’s shared identity and solidarity. He noted that the actions of a “few fringe elements” must not define relations between African nations.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over the safety of African migrants in South Africa, with authorities now under pressure to ensure accountability and prevent further escalation.
