EgyptAir is expanding its footprint in the United States by launching new direct flights to Chicago and Los Angeles, marking a major strategic push into the North American market and creating new travel opportunities for passengers across Africa, including Ghana.

The expansion was announced during a meeting between EgyptAir Chairman and Chief Executive Pilot Ahmed Adel and Acting U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Robert Silverman in Cairo as both countries moved to strengthen bilateral cooperation in aviation, tourism, and air connectivity.

According to EgyptAir, the new services to Chicago and Los Angeles are expected to commence during May and June as part of the airline’s broader strategy to increase operations between Cairo and major American cities amid growing demand for travel between the two countries.

Mr. Adel said the new routes reflect EgyptAir’s ambition to strengthen its global network and provide passengers with more flexible travel options.

“We are preparing to launch new direct flights to Chicago and Los Angeles in a move aimed at boosting our global presence, offering more direct travel options to customers and solidifying our position as one of the region’s leading airlines,” he said.

The planned Los Angeles route is particularly significant, as it will provide West African passengers, including travelers from Ghana, with an additional one-stop option to the U.S. West Coast via Cairo International Airport.

Currently, many Ghanaian passengers traveling to Los Angeles rely heavily on European or Gulf transit hubs, including London, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Doha. EgyptAir’s expansion is expected to provide a shorter, more competitive routing alternative between Accra and the western United States.

The move also highlights intensifying competition among African, Gulf and global airlines seeking to capture growing Africa-U.S. passenger traffic.

The U.S. ambassador praised the historic relationship between Egypt and the United States and described the new routes as an important boost to tourism, business and economic ties.

“It is certain that the establishment of these new lines will be a strong addition to the economic and tourism relations between the two countries,” Mr. Silverman said.

EgyptAir currently serves Accra as part of its wider African network linking the continent through Cairo.
