Air Côte d’Ivoire to resume Casablanca and Johannesburg Routes Ahead of AFCON | By Dominick Andoh| Accra, June 5, 2025 |
Air Côte d’Ivoire is making strategic moves to resume its suspended routes to Casablanca and Johannesburg ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament scheduled to be hosted in Morocco this December, AviationGhana has gathered.
According to reliable sources within the airline, Abidjan–Casablanca services are expected to resume in time for the continental football spectacle, providing enhanced connectivity between West Africa and North Africa. This will be a major boost for football fans, tourists, and business travellers aiming to travel between Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Morocco during the tournament.
The development follows the airline’s recent announcement of suspending its Casablanca route earlier this month, with the last flight on that leg operated between June 2–3, 2025.
In addition, the airline is working toward reinstating its Johannesburg service, which was suspended with immediate effect on June 3, citing operational reasons. AviationGhana has learned that the service is now slated to resume operations by October 2025, giving travellers a renewed option to fly between Abidjan and South Africa’s commercial capital just months ahead of AFCON.
The resumption of both routes signals Air Côte d’Ivoire’s commitment to regional and continental integration, especially at a time when major sporting events tend to drive spikes in air travel across Africa.
The carrier has been steadily expanding its intra-African network and remains a crucial player in connecting West Africa with North, Central, and Southern Africa. Its renewed push to restore these two critical routes is expected to support both tourism and business travel across the continent during the high-demand AFCON season.
Industry observers note that the upcoming tournament presents a golden opportunity for African airlines to capture increased passenger volumes. Air Côte d’Ivoire’s early positioning in this regard is seen as both timely and strategic.
Travellers from Ghana, who often connect through Abidjan for onward flights, stand to benefit significantly from the resumed services to Morocco and South Africa.
More details on flight schedules and booking windows are expected to be officially announced by Air Côte d’Ivoire in the coming weeks.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be hosted by Morocco and will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
